Shocking Numbers: 95% of Students Using ChatGPT

The numbers are absolutely wild! A July 2025 study by the Seoul Education Research and Information Institute found that 94.7 percent of Seoul's middle and high school students have used generative AI tools like "ChatGPT" and "Gemini." How Students Actually Use AI in School

So what are they doing with it? Mostly studying! About 80 percent use AI for academic purposes – 42.5 percent for classroom activities and 35.7 percent for independent study. Language classes see the heaviest use, with over 60 percent of students using AI in Korean and English. They create assignments, summarize readings, translate sentences, and check pronunciation. Math comes in at 38.3 percent, while music and art trail behind at under 20 percent.

Teachers Are Seriously Worried

Here's where things get real! Of the 3,334 teachers surveyed, 93.4 percent believe students are becoming too dependent on AI. That's almost everyone! And 92.4 percent worry about plagiarism, while 92.5 percent fear students are losing their ability to think critically. Teachers see students passively consuming AI-generated content instead of developing their own ideas. The concern is genuine and widespread across Seoul's education community.

The Ironic Gap: Concerns Without Action

But here's the twist – less than half of teachers (47.6 percent) actually teach students how to use AI properly! Why? 37.7 percent say no time, 22.8 percent don't understand AI themselves, and 12.2 percent don't think it's necessary. Yet ironically, 60 percent of teachers use AI for their own work – writing evaluations and preparing lessons. Seven in 10 even use it in classroom activities! This gap between concern and education needs urgent attention.
